Report on Religious Field Research Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 2

Report on Religious Field Research - Essay Example A large number of individuals in America and the whole world practice Christianity (Dyet, 2006). Being the most well known religion on the planet, there are different misguided judgments about Christianity, some of which I for one held for such a long time. This exploration gave me an extraordinary chance to attempt to comprehend the Christian Religion and attempt to find solutions to the inquiries I have had about Christianity for quite a while. Most Christians likewise hold different biases against different strict gatherings, which has prompted strict separation and wars in territories commanded by one religion (Driscoll, 2009). So as to comprehend the Christian Religion, I went to a Christian supplication administration at a Baptist Church, where I associated with the Christian people group in the congregation as they helped me comprehend the fundamental establishments of Christianity. I figured out how to have a little conversation with a couple of Christians as a meeting to hel p away from of the biases I had towards their religion. After an extensive conversation, I had the option to comprehend the Christian religion and change a portion of the bogus impressions I had about this strict gathering. Probably the greatest confusion I had concerning Christianity is the means by which a Christian Worship Service is fundamentally fixated on lessons about how terrible different religions are. I had consistently accepted that Christians are instructed to detest different religions (Driscoll, 2009). This is a misguided judgment I had held since my youth days during my cooperations with Christian who held very disdain sees on different religions. I was made to accept, from their perspectives, that they were shown such sort of thoughts in their places of worship during love administrations and Christian lessons. In the wake of going to the Service in a Christian Church, I had the option to change this confusion. This was after cautiously tuning in to the message and the lesson of the Preacher. His message was for the most part fixated on affection for each other, understanding and common regard and conjunction (Driscoll, 2009). The Preacher stressed the point that God made individuals in his own picture and in this way every person ought to be adored as the person speaks to the picture of God Himself. He additionally expressed that it is through cherishing each other that individuals express their affection for God, and that is the means by which they will have the option to get to paradise (Dyet, 2006). As per the Bible, God made all mankind, so it doesn't make a difference the religion one has a place with (Driscoll, 2009). The central matter is that every person have a place with God, and ought to be adored and regarded. Subsequent to tuning in to such messages, I needed to change my view on Christianity and lessen my partialities in regards to how they treat different religions. I was astonished to discover that Christianity is such an invi ting religion, whose fundamental message depends on affection for God and for each other. The other misinterpretation I had in regards to the Christian religion before this experience was that Christians loathed different religions just in light of the fact that they were not devotees to Christ Jesus. This preference kept me off from blending openly with Christians since I was unable to confide in the thought processes of some of them, since I was not a supporter and I felt they abhorred all non Christians and treated them like non adherents who don't have the right to live. This misguided judgment denied me such huge numbers of chances of making Christian companions and blending openly with others and sharing thoughts. Over the span of this examination on religion, I had the option to run over some extremely testing

GoFuel bargains in an industry that requires an elevated level of wellbeing at the working environment first for the representatives and afterward to the clients (Bega Valley Shire Council, 2014). Security is a need and there are sure necessities an organization need to set up to guarantee they consent to satisfactory WHS measures which incorporates having an ensured working condition, legitimate alerted methodology, wellbeing rules, fire quenchers just as defensive apparatuses. In the audit of the data gave by the GoFuel Pty Ltd, various approaches and techniques can be named as the pertinent in most definitely: Exercises dependent on a day by day, week by week, and yearly premise. The occasional support of the electronic information is a decent sign. Episode rundown reports. Arrangement of the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The protection strategies are set up. There are medical aid packs in each store and most completely loaded. Research on the Proposed Design of WHSMS Concocting a powerful WHS the executives framework requires a broad thought of all the legitimate systems that are set up (Sparq Solutions, n.d.). It bodes well for the administration structure to consider all the accessible lawful arrangements that manage all the working environment wellbeing measures as to WHS rules and guidelines. The nearby thought of the accessible lawful measures guarantees the companys proceeded with satisfaction of the WHS for its representatives without penetrating the set national principles (Safe Work Australia, n.d.). Moreover, it likewise gives the organization a perfect bill and forestalls any superfluous confusions in the event of the worker objections. For example, the Victorian WHS lawful structure contains the most recent guidelines which started on June of 2017 (Work Safe Victoria, n.d.). The proposed codes in connection WHS incorporated the unsafe manual consistence codes, perilous substance dealing with code, the plant consistence, destruction consistence and Noise consistence codes among different codes. The Work Health and Safety Act 2011 give an away from to the assurance of the government assistance, wellbeing, and security of all representatives at the work environment. The WHS demonstration gives security to all laborers including the representatives, the contractual workers, outworkers, chips in and even the work experience understudies among others. The Act likewise sets out the guidelines for the notice of the episodes, conversations with the laborers, issues around the offenses and punishments, question goals and the force and elements of the monitors (State of Queensland, 2015). The WHS the executives frameworks for an organization like GoFuel require exacting measures in hazard the board, beginning from the arrangement of the defensive riggings for the laborers and guaranteeing they use them suitably. Likewise, the records in each movement inside the firm, from representative data to episode and protection records are on the whole crucial. Applicable Policies and Procedures Adapted from Acquiring Business The procurement of any business substance would require the selection of a portion of the current strategies and guidelines. Thusly, GoFuels obtaining of ISS implied that the organization needed to hold and adjust a portion of the guidelines and systems of the ISS. The Smoking Policy Given that the GoFuel procurement of ISS included the organizations in a similar industry and a similar activity line; adjusting the smoking strategy is a significant advance. Energizes are exceptionally combustible, which implies that, on the off chance that the smoking patterns are not controlled inside the workplace, at that point perilous fire episodes may be unavoidable. Liquor and Drugs Policy The utilization of liquor and different types of medications impacts the activities of the laborers and how they work. That is the reason it is a significant for the organization to receive arrangements that manage the utilization of medications at the working environment to improve wellbeing for everybody inside the workplace. Crisis Procedures The pertinent crisis strategies that can adequately be embraced for this situation by GoFuel incorporates the fire crisis techniques to forestall fire frequencies; the emergency treatment methodology in the event of any wounds at the work environment, the fuel spill system, and the equipped hold up if there should be an occurrence of an assault by the looters or buglers at the work environment. Extra, the record keeping methodology ought to be organized, which incorporates records of the episodes, representative data, the protection data, the records on the worker preparing and records on the laborers' remunerations plans among others. The selection of all these recordkeeping steps is to guarantee that all the wellbeing guidelines of the workers are tended to successfully corresponding to WHS prerequisites. Human, Physical and Financial Resources Required The usage of a WHS the board framework requires a mix of human, physical and money related speculation to understand its full execution. HR are required and these include the representatives, and the administration (Shen et al. 2009); the physical assets like the premises and the hardware used to execute, and in particular, the money, which is the most pivotal determinant of all the necessary assets. This WHS the board framework system would require contributions of the head supervisors, move administrators and clerks, and WHS expert. Furthermore, preparing rooms are required for the successful usage. The all out expense of the previously mentioned factors charged on the hourly premise would cost at a normal of $250. Record Keeping Policy and Procedure Records ought to be kept in an increasingly characterized manner which tends to all the worries and the events that occur inside the workplace. These records would include data on the risk reports, and the occurrence reports among others. The layout beneath speaks to an example format in which most sorts of occurrences are recorded. Kind of the Incident All out No. The Affected Person(s) Work Days Lost Fuel Spill Fire in garbage canister Slip on wet shop floor Falling stock for possible later use Excursion Consumes A Report on Managing laborers counsel The fruitful usage of a WHS the board framework structure relies upon the administrations capacity to include the laborers in the dynamic since they are the essential subjects with respect to the WHS guidelines. It is in this manner basic for the administration to cling to the laborers predicaments (Hussain Ahmad, 2012; Turner, Huemann, Keegan, 2010). Effective firms focus on what the laborers need to state concerning what influences them, and this includes having a decent HR group inside the firm. The coordination between the administration and the laborers will lessen pointless grinding and the general chance of damaging WHS guidelines. The possible objections by some segment of the workers of GoFuel underline the companys need to direly audit their WHS the executives framework. Given this is a zone which straightforwardly influences the representatives; it would demonstrate an expensive misstep if the administration completely disregarded their endeavors to have their commitments thought of. A powerful WHS the board structure considers all the authoritative elements that are legitimately identified with the specialist security measures, and in consistence with the current arrangement of rules, approaches and lawful systems inside the nation of activity. There are numerous ways the organization can include the investment of the representatives in the WHS dynamic procedure. Their commitment, in any case, must be checked on and assessed to decide how adequately they can address the wellbeing and security issues of the laborers at the working environment. A portion of the methodology to guarantee representative cooperation in WHS dynamic incorporate representative preparing, open meeting conference with the administration, the utilization of recommendation boxes, permitting the laborers choose their own delegates and tending to developing concerns. Representative Training Representatives at GoFuel are not successfully prepared to manage security necessities that are set out in the lawful systems for WHS. This is mostly in light of the fact that the organization has not made the fitting strides in offering broad preparing to its workers. In this way, worker preparing would outfit the representative with the capacity to contribute emphatically to the WHS objectives. Open Session Consultations Sometimes, open meeting conference between the top administration and the representatives is pivotal for the inclusion of the considerable number of gatherings in the dynamic procedures. It includes permitting workers to air their perspectives about what influences them most comparable to WHS. The Use of Suggestion Boxes Proposal boxes are acceptable methods for letting the workers air their view without fundamentally meeting the administration. The administration will get an opportunity of perusing the regular representative concerns and tending to them when fundamental. Ancient Roman Religion Essay Example For Students

Ancient Roman Religion Essay Throughout the history of Rome, from the monarchy to the late empire, religion had played a great role in its society and was involved in almost every aspect of the life of the Roman citizen. It was common for each house to have its own patron god/gods and ,on special occasions, the head of the house would make a sacrifice to the personal gods of the family. Also, great festivals were usually held in honor of certain gods and would include spectacles like chariot races and Gladiatorial fights. The religious practices of the ancient Romans are best remembered with grand temples, great festivals and Christian persecution to the final acceptance of Christianity within the Roman empire over the traditional pagan religions. The Roman religious practices can be divided into three phases which span from the founding of the city to the fall of the empire. The First Phase (753 BC to 500 BC) The first phase of Roman religion dated from the founding of the city to the early republic. This phase occurred before the Roman civilization had really adopted the Greek ways and so the religious practices of this time consisted of only three gods and these gods were known as the Archaic Triad. The gods of the archaic Triad were Jupiter (Jove) ,Mars and Quirinus. These gods had their Greek counterparts and would later be identified with them. Jupiter was the supreme master god and so he was associated with Zeus of Greek mythology. Ares was the god of power and war and so he was associated with his Greek counterpart, Ares and Quirinus was the god of the Roman people in general and he had no Greek counterpart. Mars was valued and worshipped more by the conquering and warlike Romans than Ares was to the Greeks and ,as a result, he had The Fields of Mars named after him. The Fields of Mars was located outside of Rome and it is where the soldiers woul d train. The Second Phase (500 BC to 313 AD) Before the end of the 6th century BC Greek influence had begun to affect Roman religion and this resulted in the transformation from the Archaic Triad to the more Greek influenced Captioline triad. In this triad the gods Mars and Quirinus were replaced by Juno and Minerva. As time went on ,during the second phase, the Romans adopted more variations and the number of Roman deities grew as ,like the Greek counterparts, they had a god for almost every aspect of society. During the later part of the Republic and throughout most of the pagan empire, the Romans deified ( or made gods of) people who were well loved or committed great deeds during their life. People were usually deified after their death and the deification was most always done by the senate. With the assination (and later deification) of Julius Caesar, it became popular for the senate to reward dead emperors ,who had served well in life, with deification. A humorous note to this involves the death of the emperor Vespasian in which he said ,just before he died, I feel I am becoming a god. Upon deification an emperor usually had temples built in his honor and a cult of followers. Also, during this period the Vestal Virgins were a major part of Roman religious practices. The Vestal Virgins were a sacred group of women whose duty it was to keep the sacred fire of Vesta burning at all times. The Vestal Virgins were required to take a vow of chastity upon entering the cult and the breaking of these vows was an offense punishable by a painful death. These revered women were so highly regarded by the Roman populace that they were given seats of honor in public places ,like the arena, when the regular woman was always put in less nobel areas. The Third Phase (313 AD to 476 AD) By the early empire ,in the first century AD, the traditional form of Roman religion was beginning to show signs of breaking up. Causes for this breakup could be attributed to the swarms of new religious beliefs that were sweeping through the Roman empire and the fact that most of these theologies promised peace after death to the destitute and uneducated majority of the Roman populace. The most notable of these new religions was Christianity ,which had found its roots in the rebellious Roman territory of Judea. And so it Came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augstus that whole world should be taxed These famous lines of the Christian Bible describe the first mention of a Roman Emperor and would be remembered throughout history with the birth of Jesus Christ ,the symbol of christianity. Though his life was short and he was crucified at an extremely young age, Jesus developed a cult following due to his presumed miracles and of his preaching of eternal peace and everlasting life. His crucifixion resulted in the spreading of his faith throughout the Roman empire and in the beginning of the end of traditional Roman religion. Ironically enough it was the Romanization of Europe that allowed the Christian faith to easily spread. By the death of Christ, the whole Roman empire was connected with well constructed roads and inns which allowed the prophets to spread their message easily and safely. During the first decades preceding Christs death, Christians were tolerated but not really liked by the general population of the Roman empire due to their refusal to acknowledge the emperor as a living god. This act of defiance was considered heresy by the state .The real mass persecution of the Christian people came during the reign of the emperor Nero who needed a scapegoat on whom to blame the great fire during his reign. He chose the Christians because they were only a new group and did not have the total acceptance of the Roman people. These persecutions were horrible and involved all sorts of barbaric tortures which included the victim being fed to the lions, crucified or being used as a human torch. These same persecutions which were meant to discourage christianity actually helped it to grow because it was believed that the Christians died for their religion (became Martyrs) which made them look even more nobel to the people. Because of this persecution, many early Christians were forced to worship in the Roman Catacombs which was one of the few places they would be safe. The catacombs were sacred to the Romans because their dead were buried there and it was forbidden for them to kill anyone within their walls. It is also true that the crucifix was not always the symbol of Christianity but ,in fact, it started out as a Pagan Roman symbol. The fish was the identifying symbol among the early Christians and they identified with each other through that way. The beginning of the third phase and of the adoption of Christianity as the official religion of the Roman Empire occurred in 312 BC, upon the conversion of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great. It is said that he had a vision from the Christian god before a monumental battle in which he was told that he would have victory if he painted the sign of Christianity on the shields of his men. He did what was told of him and was victorious and converted the empire to Christianity. What is Religion Essay To the Romans, the next world was as much a fact as this one. To get to the underworld, Charon, ferryman of the underworld, would take them across the river Styx. To pay him, a coin would be placed in the dead persons mouth, even if the body was cremated. The Romans had a much vaguer concept than the Celts of what conditions in the underworld would actually be like, although they did have the idea that good was rewarded and evil punished. Many educated Romans did not believe in the old gods, and turned to foreign gods such as Mithras (from Persia), Isis (from Egypt) and Bacchus (from Greece). The Bacchants did not seem respectable to ordinary Romans, because they used wine in their worship and were thought to conduct drunken orgies. This religion was one of the few not to be tolerated. The Druids were a Celtic group whom the Romans did not tolerate, because not only did they practise human sacrifice, but they also had great power over the aristocratic class. A hideous and shameful Eastern religion was Christianity. The people were usually allowed to practise any religion provided they worshipped the Emperor as well, but Christians could not consider worshipping any other gods. For this, they were accused of treason; this was also the cause of antagonism between the Romans and the Jews. Many Christians were poor people and slaves, so were suspected of subversive plotting. Because they celebrated the Eucharist with brea d and wine, which represent the body and blood of Christ, they were accused of cannibalism. Many Christians were killed, like Julius and Aaron at Caerleon, who may have died in the arena as public entertainment. The origins of the Roman pantheon began with the small farming community that made up the ancient village of Rome. The foundations of the mythology included nameless and faceless deities that lended support to the community while inhabiting all objects and living things. Numen, as the belief in a pantheistic inhabitation of all things is called, would later take root in more clearly defined system of gods, but early on this belief that everything was inhabited by numina was the prevalent system. Even though the early Romans were not very concerned with the distinct personalities of each god within their pantheon, there was a rigid clarification of what each particular deity was responsible for. All aspects of life within Rome were guided not only by the pantheon of familiar names we are accustomed to, but to the household cult of the Dii Familiaris as well. With this belief set, every family or household was believed to be assigned a guardian spirit known as the Lar Familiaris (Lars). All family functions included these spiritual guardians in some form or another. Among these spirits that played a role in the spiritual life of Romans were Genii for men and junii for women. Each of these individual deities stayed with a person for life and represented the creative force that determined gender and allowed individuals to grow, learn and behave morally within society. The Dii Familiaris were so ingrained within the household that several spirits were assigned to specific respons ibilities within a home. Forculus protected the door, Limentinus the threshold, Cardea the hinges, and Vesta the hearth. Most of the Roman gods and goddesses were a blend of several religious influences. Many of these were introduced via the Greek colonies of southern Italy and others had their roots in the Etruscan or Latin tribes of the region. In some cases the Etruscan or Latin names survived throughout the cultural existence of Rome, but many were adopted so completely that they maintained their names from other cultures. In the east, the Greek names remained the choice of the people and the major gods of the system therefore, were known by both. The gods of the Roman pantheon began taking on the forms known today during the dynasty of the Etruscan kings in the 6th century BC. These gods, Jupiter (Zeus), Juno (Hera), and Minerva (Athena), were worshiped at the grand temple on the Capitoline Hill. As Romes power grew and expanded throughout the known world, the Roman Empire came into contact with the cultures and religious beliefs of many cultures. The Romans, happy to absorb and assimilate any culture they encountered thereby reaping the benefits of both its wealth and religious influence, were a mosaic of belief systems. Foreign gods and customs not only played major roles but were also given temples and priesthoods within Rome itself. The goddess Cybele, a Phoenician god was adopted during the Second Punic War to counteract any benefit that Hannibal may have gained. Even after his defeat, Cybele remained an integral part of the Roman system. Another very popular foreign god was the Persian god Mithra. Overwhelmingly support ed in the Legions, this deity offered eternal salvation for the immortal soul and its popularity helped pave the way for the later Christian cult whose similarities made its adoption less difficult. With the passing of the Roman Republic into that of an Imperial system, the nature of Roman religion expanded again to include the Emperors themselves. Julius Caesar, having claimed to be a direct descendent of Aeneas, the son of Venus, was among the first to deify himself in such a manner. At first, such a system of human divinity was largely rejected by the masses, but the popularity of Caesar helped pave the way for future leaders. As the Imperial system gained hold, it was common practice for the Emperors to accept divine honors before their deaths. These living gods, in some cases, required sacrificial rituals as signs of loyalty and ingrained themselves with the older more traditional pagan gods. The requirement of a sacrifice to the emperor, as well as the forced belief in the complete pantheon became a significant source of conflict with early Christians. As Christians refused to worship the emperor as a god, persecution of the Christians and conflict with the cult was a constant source of strife. Emperor worship would continue until late in the western Empire until the reign of Constantine. In the early 4th century AD, Constantine either converted to Christianity or made it an acceptable part of Roman religion, eliminating the emperor deification altogether. Later Emperors such as Julian attempted to revive the old ways, but the deeply rooted Mithraism, and Christian cults combined were firmly set within Roman society. By 392 AD, Emperor Theodosius I banned the practice of pagan religions in Rome altogether and Christianity was, without question, the official religion of the state.

Enlightenment Essays (840 words) - Age Of Enlightenment, Philosophes

Enlightenment The Enlightenment is a name given by historians to an intellectual movement that was predominant in the Western world during the 18th century. Strongly influenced by the rise of modern science and by the aftermath of the long religious conflict that followed the Reformation, the thinkers of the Enlightenment (called philosophes in France) were committed to secular views based on reason or human understanding only, which they hoped would provide a basis for beneficial changes affecting every area of life and thought. The more extreme and radical philosophes--Denis Diderot, Claude Adrien Helvetius, Baron d'Holbach, the Marquis de Condorcet, and Julien Offroy de La Mettrie (1709-51)--advocated a philosophical rationalism deriving its methods from science and natural philosophy that would replace religion as the means of knowing nature and destiny of humanity; these men were materialists, pantheists, or atheists. Other enlightened thinkers, such as Pierre Bayle, Voltaire, David Hume, Jean Le Rond D'alembert, and Immanuel Kant, opposed fanaticism, but were either agnostic or left room for some kind of religious faith. All of the philosophes saw themselves as continuing the work of the great 17th century pioneers--Francis Bacon, Galileo, Descartes, Leibnitz, Isaac Newton, and John Locke--who had developed fruitful methods of rational and empirical inquiry and had demonstrated the possibility of a world remade by the application of knowledge for human benefit. The philosophes believed that science could reveal nature as it truly is and show how it could be controlled and manipulated. This belief provided an incentive to extend scientific methods into every field of inquiry, thus laying the groundwork for the development of the modern social sciences. The enlightened understanding of human nature was one that emphasized the right to self-expression and human fulfillment, the right to think freely and express one's views publicly without censorship or fear of repression. Voltaire admired the freedom he found in England and fostered the spread of English ideas on the Continent. He and his followers opposed the intolerance of the established Christian churches of their day, as well as the European governments that controlled and suppressed dissenting opinions. For example, the social disease which Pangloss caught from Paquette was traced to a "very learned Franciscan" and later to a Jesuit. Also, Candide reminisces that his passion for Cunegonde first developed at a Mass. More conservative enlightened thinkers, concerned primarily with efficiency and administrative order, favored the"enlightened despotism" of such monarchs as Emperor Joseph II, Frederick II of Prussia, and Catherine II of Russia. Enlightened political thought expressed demands for equality and justice and for the legal changes needed to realize these goals. Set forth by Baron de Montesquieu, the changes were more boldly urged by the contributors to the great Encyclopedie edited in Paris by Diderot between 1747 and 1772, by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Cesare Beccaria, and finally by Jeremy Bentham, whose utilitarianism was the culmination of a long debate on happiness and the means of achieving it. The political writers of the Enlightenment built on and extended the rationalistic, republican, and natural-law theories that had been evolved in the previous century as the bases of law, social peace, and just order. As they did so, they also elaborated novel doctrines of popular sovereignty that the 19th century would transform into a kind of nationalism that contradicted the individualistic outlook of the philosophes. Among those who were important in this development were historians such as Voltaire, Hume, William Robertson, Edward Gibbon, and Giambattista Vico. Their work showed that although all peoples shared a common human nature, each nation and every age also had distinctive characteristics that made it unique. These paradoxes were explored by early romantics such as Johann Georg Hamman and Johann Gottfried von Herder. Everywhere the Enlightenment produced restless men impatient for change but frustrated by popular ignorance and official repression. This gave the enlightened literati an interest in popular education. They promoted educational ventures and sought in witty, amusing, and even titillating ways to educate and awaken their contemporaries. The stories of Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle or Benjamin Franklin, the widely imitated essays of Joseph Addison and Richard Steele, and many dictionaries, handbooks, and encyclopedias produced by the enlightened were written to popularize, simplify, and promote a more reasonable view of life among the people of their time. The Enlightenment came to an end in western Europe after the upheavals of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era (1789-1815) revealed the costs of its political program and the lack of commitment in those whose rhetoric was often more liberal than their actions. Nationalism undercut its cosmopolitan values and assumptions about human nature, and the romantics attacked its belief that clear intelligible answers could be found to every question asked

Five Spelling Rules for Silent Final E

Five Spelling Rules for Silent Final E Five Spelling Rules for Silent Final E Five Spelling Rules for Silent Final E By Maeve Maddox Many English words end in the letter e. In an earlier stage of the language, many of these final es were pronounced. Now, however, unless the word is a foreign borrowing, the final e is silent. Although final e is silent, it usually has a job to do. Here are the five rules for the use of silent final e. 1. Silent final e makes the vowel say its name. Compare the pronunciation of the following pairs of words: con cone cut cute mat mate In cone, the e makes the o say O. In cute, the e makes the u say U. In mate, the e makes the a say A. This first and most common kind of silent final e makes the letter say its name. 2. English words dont end in v or u. The e at the end of have and blue do not affect pronunciation. The e is there because the words would otherwise end in v or u. Impromptu is one of the few exceptions to this rule. 3. Silent E after the letters C and G soften their sounds. The letter C can represent the sounds of either /k/ as in cat or /s/ as in cent. The letter G can represent the sounds of either /g/ as in gum or /j/ as in gym. Silent final e after C and G indicates that the sounds are /s/ and /j/. Ex. lance and charge. Without the silent final e, these words would represent the pronunciations /lank/ and /charg/. 4. Every syllable must have a vowel. In words like candle, pickle, and people, the final syllable can be pronounced without a vowel, but in English, every syllable must have a vowel. (Would we really want to write pebbl or littl?) 5. Sometimes the silent final e has no purpose whatever. In words like are, and ore, the silent final e does not affect the pronunciation or provide a missing vowel, or keep a word from ending in v or u. This is the e that Mrs. Spalding (Romalda Spalding, The Writing Road to Reading) calls no-job e. Like Everest, its there. The word resumà © is often spelled in English with the French accent aigu to indicate the untypical pronunciation. The final e at the end of the Italian musical borrowing forte (loudly, powerfully) is pronounced like a long a: /for-tay/. Ex. This measure is marked forte. The final e at the end of the French borrowing forte (strength, strong point) is silent, although many speakers pronounce this word the same way they do the musical term. Ex. Cooking is not my forte. Industrious critics will point out exceptions that Ive failed to mention, but in most cases, the five rules apply and are useful to know. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Graffiti as a Voice for Teens Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Graffiti as a Voice for Teens - Term Paper Example Peer pressure may be in either positive or negative ways; where the students that succumb to its negative side, will end up making bad choices that lead them to a slippery slope. The result of a slippery slope is the unfortunate development of bad habits such as smoking, alcohol and/or drug abuse and engaging in criminal activities. For this reason, every high school should create an open forum for the students where they are free and at ease to discuss challenges they face in their everyday lives. Teachers and counselors should then be at hand to talk them through overcoming the challenges and turning them into opportunities for growth and success into the future. In creating such an open forum, the school should consider the emotional, physical and mental status of the students and come up with creative and exciting activities in order to encourage their participation. Considering their emotional, physical and mental status includes recognizing that the students will be talented in different areas where non-performance in academics does not render them failures. Students may instead be skilled in non-academic activities such as painting, drawing, playing musical instruments or photography. Teachers should hence, reserve this in mind when interacting with the students in the class. The administration should also consider this when structuring such open forums. The adolescent has thoughts and interpretations about various issues in their environment and will want to express these through various means. Because of their youthfulness, their energy needs to be directed into positive ways of voicing their views and opinions to prevent them from being destructive. Besides that, there may be students that lack interest in political or environmental issues, which undoubtedly will affect them. The administrations should then use the ‘crowd mentality’ to arouse interest in such students using creative works from the students that have an interest.

The Father Essay Essay Example for Free

The Father Essay Essay A man is shaped by the people in his environment. In The Father by Hugh Garner, John Purcell, the father, is not dysfunctional, the whole family is. He attempts to fit in but he is stopped, not only by his son, but by also the rest of his dysfunctional family. John attempts to be integrate into his family, but on several occasions is obstructed by his son. John attempts to start conversations with Johnny, but is ignored and soon stops these futile attempts. In addition, when he tries to watch his son play, his son bluntly ignores him. As well, John enthusiastically greets his son on the street only to have a wave in return. John even goes to a Boy Scout dinner in hopes of repairing the damage in the relationship between him and his son; nevertheless, his son continues to embarrass him. As you can see, the father is actually trying to become a handy member of his family, however, his family is actually hindering him from accomplishing his goal. The main person responsible for blocking John from becoming purposeful is his own son Johnny. Johnny doesnt talk with his dad, therefore, making him feel isolated from his son since he knows nothing about him. Whenever Johnnys dad tries to become functional with Johnny, Johnny makes his dad feel stupid for trying. Some more specific examples of this is when dad saw Johnny on the street, Johnny barely managed a wave. Also, when his dad went to see his son play games in the schoolyard, Johnny bluntly ignored his dad. Johnny is the main reason that John is not succeeding in becoming useful. However, the other members of the family also help Johnny in his evil deeds. Johnny is accountable for most of the blockage against his father; however, he also receives help from his family. To maintain as little as communication between Johnny and his father, Johnny gets his mom to talk the father for him. Johnny told his mother to give the dad the invitation to the Boy Scout dinner. Furthermore, the family reprimands John by telling him to be nice to Johnny, making it seem as if the distance between him and his son is his entire fault. As you can see, the whole family participates to forbid  John Purcell from becoming a functional member of the family. As you have just read, a man is shaped by the people in his environment. It is not John Purcells fault that he is dysfunctional; it is the familys fault that he is dysfunctional. John is trying to become a functional member, however, his dysfunctional family refuses to cooperate with him. With this evidence, you would come to the conclusion that it is not that John Purcell is dysfunctional; its the whole family that is dysfunctional.

Entertainment: Fun or Influential Essay -- Media Women

The Greeks seemed to believe that entertainment was meant to provide a person with an outlet to relieve stress. Such an assumption would lead one to believe that the form and content of entertainment is a matter of personal choice. However, entertainment has the underlying current of influencing what is normal and acceptable in society. Furthermore, culture is affected to the point of unsavory entertainment permeating the lives of those who avoid such forms of entertainment. Entertainment is not merely a personal choice. Entertainment is an instrument of influence on society. Young girls experience stardom and are forever changed by the experience. Sometimes the change leads them in a positive direction and other times it leads them in an opposing negative direction. In Hit Her, Baby, One More Time, Traiste states â€Å"Britney Spears embodies the disdain in which the culture holds its young women: the desire to sexualize them while young, and to degrade and punish them as they get older† (Traiste 431). Spears embarked on her journey into entertainment as an innocent young girl. However, over time she evolved into a tainted, dim reflection of her former self. It would seem that even her parents played a role in her spiraling downfall as she struggled to remain in the limelight. Tabloids cherished the young star. However, they ripped her to pieces as her life began to plunge into an abyss. Certainly, there is a high price to be paid to when one compromises. Spears popularity influenced the actions of young girls who may have seen her as a role model. It most likely would not have been detrimental for young girls to follow in her footsteps in her early days of success. In contrast, continuing to mimic her ac... ...en they produce movies that depict Blacks and Asians in stereo typical roles that are demeaning. Furthermore, they affect how society views individuals and how those individuals are treated, because they shape culture with the movies they produce. People may embark into the world of media for fun and relaxation, but the reality remains that the media shapes their views and beliefs in the process. Entertainment is not just for fun. Furthermore, entertainment shapes the morals and values of people and the value placed on people. Works Cited: Jackson, Samuel L. "In Character." Latterell, Catherine G. Remix. American history since 1876

Wars often have a significant impact upon the domestic development of a nation. Every nation at one point or the other has experienced a war of some sort and this has gone a long way in shaping economic, political and social lives of citizens. United States in particular had a fair share of wars especially looking back at the last two or so decades. The World War and the Cold War were very instrumental in shaping what the United States of America is today. This discussion looks at how these two wars brought about changes in the political, social and economic arenas (Martin, G.S. 2004). The Second World War commonly referred to as World War 2 was conflict in the military that was felt throughout the world by all nations. The Cold War on the other hand was subsequent to the Second World War and it was a conflict between the western region of the world led by U. S and the Soviet Union. The effects of the world war were evident in many countries and United States was no exception. The ef fects were both negative and positive. They were negative in the sense there was a lot of destruction of property and many lives were lost. However there are also many positive effects in that many developments were achieved. The first notable development was in the area of technology. It is during the world war that the forerunner was developed which would later bring about the development of television. This paved way for the growth of the economy of what was later to become the world’s superpower. It was not all about growth. As already mentioned the Second World War also had far reaching negative effects. One of the greatest economic devastations that have always been associated with the Second World War was the Great Depression where banks closed unemployment soared as factories closed down, people starved, there were long queues for bread and the rural folks lost their mortgages. It was due to deteriorated housing conditions, unbearable working conditions and unavailabili ty of essential commodities that is said to have brought the economic growth down. The government’s ability to control the economy through control over spending and consumption emerged during the great depression. It is thus believed that the Great Depression did contribute indirectly to the growth of the economy of the U. S. It is also clear that the Cold War left the U. S as the only super power with Russia having collapsed (Martin, G. S. 2004). The World War 2 and the Cold did also have effects on the social and cultural life of the Americans. It was evident that after such a long period of war American citizens were finding it hard to adjust to the ordinary life. It took them a couple of years before they could adjust but finally they were able to.However from research conducted there are clear indications that the general living standards of American citizens improved. In conclusion it is clear that the Second World War and the Cold war did have a great impact in the inte rnational community and United States in particular. The effects were both positive and negative. However in most cases the positive effects are more visible as America emerged as the world’s super power due to these wars.
